Treating yourself to some quality time at the salon is a fantastic way of cheering yourself up when the days get shorter and colder. There is nothing quite like walking out of the hairdressers knowing you look like a million dollars and then perhaps heading off to an evening event feeling fabulous. But of course if you have gone and spent time and money on having your hair done, then understandably you want to hold onto your luscious curls and that salon look for as long as possible.
Don’t worry though because there are some hints and tips that will help you to make the most of that blow-dry, even when the weather is not in the mood to be kind to your curls. One of the first things to get right is the preparation of your hair. Professional stylist Natalie Thomas says: “My absolute top tip for making a blow dry last is the preparation before you blow dry so choosing the right products is important – this sets the foundation for a really good finish.”
One option if you are looking for plenty of bounce is to use a product that will help to add volume to the hair and lift it from the roots. For a low-fuss curly look like Kate Middleton sometimes opts for then try preparing the hair by rubbing a thickening lotion through it while damp.
If you are blow-drying hair at home, rather than getting it done at a salon, remember to tackle the bottom layers of your hair first. It may well help to take the top layer and pin it up out of the way. Keep the nozzle of the dryer pointing downwards all the time as this will help to prevent the hair from frizzing up. Get hold of your hair at the roots and then pull the brush gently downwards towards the tips.
While there are products out there that will help to keep your curls under control, as well as protect your hair against the elements, especially from the effects of moisture in the air, there are a few pointers to remember. Stay away from hot baths and showers after you have gone for a visit to the salon for starters – the considerable amount of moisture in the air will undo all your good work!
When it comes to extending the life of a blow-dry then consider using a dry shampoo. Hair will naturally become a little oily after a day or two and so an effective way of keeping your hair looking great is to massage some powder gently into the scalp. This will help to absorb the natural oil produced by your hair and as a result make it look and feel cleaner for a longer period of time.
Of course it is important to remember that everyone’s hair is different and what works for one person will not necessarily work for another. Speaking to a professional stylist who knows your hair and how it behaves is always a good idea. Feel free to experiment with your curls though and be adventurous! If a new style doesn’t work then so be it, but never be afraid to try out new products and techniques.
